TitleLetter from the Duke of Wellington to Sir Herbert Taylor, on the subject of corporal punishment in the army
Date3 April 1833
WriterWellington, 1st Duke of, Field Marshal
AddresseeTaylor, Herbert, Sir
DescriptionOn the subject of the proposed alteration to the Mutiny Act: Lord Wellington recalls having lready given his opinion on the matter in a memorandum to Lord Hill [1st Viscount Hill], whose aim is chiefly to show the positive effects of the Power of inflicting Corporal punishment and enabling Commander Officers to maintain discipline. The Duke of Wellington believes the proposed change to be particularly dangerous if applied in Ireland, where the situation is quite unstable and more discipline is required.
This memorandum was shown also to Sir John Hobhouse.
