Admin History | Charles Culling Smith (c.1775-1853), the son of Charles Smith, Governor of Madras [Channai] and brother-in-law of Lord Wellesley, was a politician and courtier present at various state occasions. He acted as Foreign Secretary and Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs in Spencer Perceval's administration. He subsequently became Esquire to the Earl of Wellington and Equerry to Frederick, Duke of York and Albany, until the latter's death in 1827. That same year he became Commissioner of Board of Customs. Culling Smith married Lady Anne Fitzroy (1768-1844), widow of Henry Fitzroy and daughter of Garret Wesley, 1st Earl of Mornington, in August 1799. Their union produced two children: Emily Frances (1800-1889) and Frederick William Culling (d.1828), godson of Frederick, Duke of York and Albany. Lady Anne had two daughters from her previous marriage: Anne Caroline Fitzroy (d.1835) and Georgina Frederica Fitzroy (1792-1821). The family resided at Hampton Court. |
