Description | (202) Letter from Edgar Bowring to Colonel Phipps enclosing a memorandum from Captain Owen on the subject of an application made to Prince Albert (not enclosed). He also mentions that the Executive Committee returned to their 'old quarters in Palace Yard' and that in future the Commission would meet in the Arts Room at the Palace of Westminster. (202i) Letter from Earl Granville to Colonel Phipps, dated 1 December 1851, replying to Colonel Grey's note that contractors should not be allowed to take money at the door of the empty Exhibition building. He mentions that Fox & Henderson suggested instead that the building be open to the public for free, Bowring suggests that this be allowed as he thinks refusal would be unpopular. He also mentions the site which the Government wishes to purchase. |
