TitleLetter from Queen Charlotte to Prince William on family and household matters
Date5 February 1782
WriterCharlotte, Queen Consort
AddresseeWilliam, Prince (1765-1837)
DescriptionThe Queen acknowledges the receipt of William's letter brought by Captain Child.
The family is now in London even if the King moves between there and Windsor - on account of the hunting season. Mr Conway and Mr [Stephen] Digby, new Vice Chamberlain, entertain themselve with coarsing. She tells about the new fashion at the opera in London which sees the decline of [Gaspare] Pacchierotti in favour of comic opera performed by [Maddalena] Allegranti. Lady Charlotte Finch returned to the house feeling better after the recovery of Lord Winchelsea [her son, George Finch, 9th Earl of Winchelsea?] ; the Queen hopes that, for the sake of his health and his family, he will not go back to serve in his Regiment.
Other communications include two marriages and the death of the Queen's music master Bach [Johann Christian Bach, son of Johann Sebastian Bach]; Abel [Carl Friedrich Abel], on the other hand is better and continues playing well upon 'a detestable instrument' [he was a renown player of viola da gamba].
She compliments William on his good conduct and she asks him to communicate to Mr [Henry] Majendie that his father is unwell.
