Maude tells William about the recent changes of the Ministry - with Lord Pitt [William Pitt the Younger, as Prime Minister] and George Nugent-Temple-Grenville, 1st Marquess of Buckingham, as Secretary of State] in power, even if Mr Fox [Charles James Fox] and Lord North [Frederick North, 2nd Earl of Guilford] still hold a good majority in the House of Commons.
William's friends - George Oakes, Samuel Hood, Alexander Hood and Captain Dornet - are all gone to the continent. He encloses here a letter of Schomberg [Captain Isaac Schomberg] to Captain [William] Merrick; he has not heard anything of 'Little Dick'.
Maude has been recently busy furnishing his new cottage in Stanwell. He is very happy that William got over well the 'Affair of La Petite fille' [?]: dangerous thing to deal with, that required secrecy and which can leave dangerous consequences. |
