TitleLetter [in French] from the Princess of Wales to Mrs. Clayton [GEO/ADD/28/093], praising her virtues, assuring her that Mr Clayton 'has allways [sic] in this house the same freinds [sic]' and that she and the Prince [of Wales, presumably] are certain that if anything were 'stirr'd' with regard to the children, the servants or revenue, Mr Clayton would support them, asking Mrs Clayton not to 'torment your self any more', and expressing concern at her health; with transcription in French and English translation [GEO/ADD/28/040].
Daten.d. [a later pencil date suggests '?1718']
WriterCaroline, Princess of Wales (1683-1737)
AddresseeClayton, Charlotte, Mrs William
NotesThe original letter is GEO/ADD/28/093. The French transcription and English translation are on two halves of GEO/ADD/28/040. Both documents bear the circled number '22', which shows the order in which the original letter was bound.
Mrs Clayton has added two notes:-
'a': she records that Mr Clayton had 'voted in an affair agreable [sic] to his own opinion, where Mrs Clayton had desir'd him to vote according to the inclination of the Prince', and that Lady Cooper had told the Queen and the Princess that Mrs Clayton was very concerned about this.
'b': she records that the Ministry 'designd [sic]' that the King should choose the Prince of Wales's servants, and that the terms 'insisted on for a long time before the reconciliation' were the 'disposal' of the children [presumably the Prince and Princess of Wales's children], the choosing of the servants, and 'the giving up the revenue', all of which it was feared would be attempted in Parliament.
The pencil date is presumably proposed as a result of the subject matter of the letter.
