TitleWindsor Constables' Order Book
Date1730-1751
DescriptionThe volume covers the Governorship of Windsor Castle by Charles, 2nd Duke of St Albans, from 1730 to 1751. There is an incomplete and slightly eccentric index. The entries in the book mainly reference matters concerning the Forest, such as returns of deer (alive and dead) etc. There were occasional disputes about jurisdiction and rights of appointment, the general tendency being towards centralisation of all authority into the hands of the Governor, as Lord Warden of the Forest. Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough, was Ranger of the Park from 1702 to 1744.
The volume contains a warrant from William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, Lord Warden of Windsor Forest; Ranger of Windsor Great Park and Keeper of all the Forests, Parks and Warrens of Windsor, to all the Keepers, Foresters, and other officers of the Forest of Windsor.
