TitleLetter from Sir Herbert Taylor to General Lord Hill
Date14 July 1832
WriterTaylor, Herbert, Sir; private secretary to William IV
AddresseeHill, 1st Viscount; Commander-in-Chief of the Forces
DescriptionSending, enclosed, a portion of letter from Lord Grey concerning the disposal of the Government of Londonderry [Governor of Londonderry and Culmore was a British military appointment] - the vacant position will be filled by Sir John Byng [Field Marshal John Byng, 1st Earl of Strafford; this decision has caused embarassment for the King because of the initial opposition of Lord Hill] who wants to clarify the matter here with stating that the Rule that Officers having Regiments should not have Governments was approved by the King but never actually applied - because of the many exceptions that would make it impracticable. The King decides, therefore, that the Rule should not be considered and the appointment of Byng be made.
Sir Herbert suggests Lord Hill to always communicate with the Government and the Secretary of State for the War department about any decision taken. On the other hand, Sir Herbert specifies that the King would like Lord Grey not to interfere with the selection for the distinction of the Gran Cross of the Bath.
