Admin HistoryBorn at Buckingham House on the 8 November 1768, Princess Augusta Sophia was the sixth child and second daughter of George III and Queen Charlotte.
A few suitors of appropriate rank tried to win her, however the King never gave his consent. Augusta, therefore, never married although she seems to have pursued a secret relationship with Sir Brent Spencer, an Irish general in the British Army.
Princess Augusta died on 22 September 22 1840 at Clarence House, London. She was buried at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor on October 2, after lying in state at Frogmore.

This is the only, comprehensive collection of Augusta's letters surviving in the Royal Archives.. Other letters from or to Augusta are scattered across the collections of other members of the royal family.
ArrangementThe letters cover the period between 1777 to 1840, with significant gaps at times, and have been arranged chronologically up to GEO/ADD/10/91. GEO/ADD/10/92-117 contains letters from Princess Augusta to Arthur Saunders Gore, 3rd Earl of Arran and his wife, Mary Tyrell, Countess of Arran; these have been bound into a small volume and follow their own chronological order (covering the period between 1813-1831).

GEO/ADD/10/118-123 do not follow any chronological order and do not bear any relationship to the main corpus of letters.
